1 - In a Careers class, while students are completing a job shadowing experience, ask them to take photos of the professional they are shadowing. Clarify that the pictures should illustrate what the professional does at work. Following the experience, students can use the photos as they report on their experience with a short PowerPoint presentation. NOTE: permission slips would need to be signed before these photos could be used.

2 - Create a Career Collage using these photos and post the posters in the classroom, school library or guidance counselor's office.

3 - In a Nutrition and Wellness class, ask students to take pictures illustrating visually in a step-by-step manner how to complete a task. Examples might include using a blender, slicing Julienne strips, etc.

Top Five Uses for the Digital Camera in My Classroom

1. Human Development
Students are separated into groups. Each group is assigned a developmental stage. Groups take photographs of each group member demonstrating a behavior of a child in this developmental phase. Groups will develop a slideshow using their pictures that they will present to the class. During the presentation they must explain what each picture is representing.

2. Parenting
Students take photographs of themselves performing good parenting practices such as conflict resolution, discipline or preparing a child for bed. Students can demonstrate these skills on either a doll or a family member. With these photographs they create a digital presentation in the format of digital storytelling that will walk viewers through the process and highlighting important steps.

3. Interior design
Students are assigned to photograph a room or feature design they dislike within their home. From this photograph they will develop creative cost effective solutions that fit within a set budget. They will include photographs or magazine cut outs as examples of their vision. Students will combine their original photo, ideas and cost estimation into a digital presentation for the class in PowerPoint format.

4. Apparel Merchandising
Students will photograph themselves performing each step in the production of a chosen garment. They will combine the photographs into an instructional booklet giving step by step instructions in the assembly of their finished product.

5. Career Development

Students select their ideal career path and develop a portfolio of themselves being ideal candidates for the job. In this portfolio they will include achievements, education, skills and photograph of themselves carrying out the tasks required of them in this position.

  1. Child Development
    • Use a digital camera for a graphic in an assignment. For example, in Child Development, students have to create a brochure to market a preschool that they are opening up. The requirement is that they have to take pictures of children that represent the different child development stages, i.e. physical, motor skills, social development, cognitive development, etc. and describe how their preschool addresses and promotes growth in these areas.
  2. Interior Design
    • Use a digital camera to visually enhance a lecture. For example, in Interior Design, a teacher can take pictures of various items that are heavy in a certain color and represent and express the meaning and feeling that colors emit when used. First show them a picture and ask the students to write down on a piece of paper the first word they think of when they see it. Ask students for to share their answers. Then go on to explain the color represented in the picture and its meaning and uses in interior design, i.e. Pink = delicacy, Yellow = happiness, Green = serenity, Red = passionate, Warm colors: increase work speed; are stimulating, happy, and warm, etc.
  3. Professional Foods
    • Use a digital camera to help keep kitchens organized during food labs. Take pictures of the content in the drawers and cupboards and tape them on the outside of the corresponding drawer/cupboard so the students always know where to find things and where to put them back.
  4. Intro to Fashion
    • Use a digital camera to capture the responsibilities of a job when students are completing a 2-week job shadow (work-based learning program) and then have them put together a digital storybook about it. For example, one student might shadow a buyer at Nordstrom. She would then periodically have her picture taken while assisting the buyer. She would then put together a digital storybook using her pictures and other items to introduce to the class what a day in the life of a buyer would look like. It’s a great way to expose students to the many different jobs within the fashion world while giving students hands-on experience.
  5. FCS General
    • I have noticed in some high schools that they do a lot of advertising for their FCS classes to keep their numbers up. In order to advertise your classes, you could always have a digital camera handy to take pictures of a variety of activities (field trips, food labs, working with children, etc.) and create an advertising bulletin in the school so students can see all that FCS has to offer. You could also use these pictures to send out to the parents with class updates on what their kids are doing/learning.

Nutrition and Foods
  • Take photos of students while they are completing a food lab. Get action shots of the students actually preparing the food. Compile a list of photos of a variety of students and create a slideshow for them to watch as entering class later.
Child Care Careers
  • Have students create their own brochure using photos of children in child care settings. They will need to get written permission to take and use these photos.
Interior Design
  • Students will be assigned to take pictures of various textiles that would be aesthetically pleasing in a living area. They would then create a collage of these pictures.
Career Development
  • While students are job shadowing, have them take 3 pictures of what they consider to be the highlight of that particular job. For example, if they are shadowing a Dietician in a long term care facility, they make take a picture of the dietician working with a resident and journal his or her thoughts on that picture.
Apparel Merchandising
  • Students will create their own photo journal of their own apparel designs. For example, a student may be in charge of creating a pair of mittens using the high school team mascot, a hat, a t-shirt, and a scarf. Students will then need to photograph each of their designs and finished products and put in a photo journal.

  1. Parenting/Child Development – Students can make picture cards of objects familiar to a young child (toddler to 3 year old) to assist in communication. Single words can be added to aid in beginning literacy skills. Students can use these cards with young children they encounter in a child care lab experience.

  1. Nutrition – Students could prepare a nutritious meal at home, take pictures of the experience including the ingredients and pictures of them doing the prep and cooking work. Students could post them to a class blog detailing their experience and how their food met nutrition guidelines.

  1. Interior Design – On a field trip or as an out of school assignment, students can tour furniture stores to take photos of items they would place in a room they are working to design. The student’s final project would include a designed “collage” of these photos that illustrates how students would use the principles of design to create their chosen room using the items they chose.

  1. Financial Education – Students could work to develop several short and long term financial goals. Students could then take pictures of (or pictures that represent) their goal – a car, new phone, etc. Students could post the pictures at home in a prominent place (or carry them in their wallets/purses on top of their debit/credit cards or cash) as a reminder of their financial goals. They can also keep a copy of the same pictures in a folder or assignment book for financial education class to remind students of why financial education is so important.

  1. Food Preparation/Food Safety/Culinary Arts – Students can study the importance of a well organized/designed and safe kitchen by organizing the classroom kitchen drawers and cabinets. Once the drawers and cabinets are organized students will take pictures of each drawer and create labels to detail what belongs in each to make organization more concrete, especially for other (possibly younger) students that use the same kitchens. Students could then make another copy of the same photos and write their reasoning for organizing their kitchen they way they did and how it will enhance food safety and efficient food preparation.

Fashion Design/ Textiles Class
Project: Take pictures showing the steps to making a garment.
This project could be more complex for students in higher level classes by requiring more garments, or more intricate garments to be made. By having students show the step-by-step procedure they use they will be able to show different techniques and have a compilation for a professional portfolio.

Nutrition Class
Project: Make a food pyramid using pictures of food found in your house
The purpose of this project is to teach students what they healthy food they could already be eating that is found in their household. The key to a good diet is knowing and understanding proper nutrition. With a project like this students would be one step closer to eating healthier.

Basic/ Introduction to Foods Class
Project: Make an instruction book for food safety using pictures to accompany the instructions
Many people need visual aids when it comes to time spent in the kitchen. Students would make an instruction book using words and pictures of themselves handling food safely. The pictures could all be taken in class and students would be able to work in groups to complete this project.

Child Development
Project: Make an age-appropriate digital storybook
Children are being introduced to technology at a much younger age, but most of the technology is geared toward games. This would be an opportunity for students to reach out to children, using technology, but encouraging reading. The digital storybook would be comprised of pictures and sentences that tell a story. Students would be assigned an age group that their story should be targeted towards.

Interior Design
Project: Take pictures of a room and describe the changes you would make
Students would select a room where they live (if this is a problem they may use my classroom) to design and make aesthetically pleasing. The camera will document the before pictures so students can see the beginning project and visualize the end result of can see each other’s transformations.
